Online Resources to Support Planning in ELA Instruction

These web-based resources provide additional resources and support for teachers as they move through the process of planning performance tasks in English Language Arts.

  • Key Shifts in English Language Arts: On their website, the Common Core State Standards Initiative lays out the three main shifts in the focus of English Language Arts that educators need to understand in order to provide effective instruction under the Common Core State Standards.

  • Smarter Balanced ELA/Literacy Claims: The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium developed these ELA/Literacy claims to help bridge the standards and assessments, allowing for an accurate view of student achievement on the summative assessment.

  • Smarter Balanced Argumentative Performance Task Writing Rubric: The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium provides rubrics to evaluate student writing in the English Language Arts/Literacy performance tasks. This rubric is designed for argumentative writing in grades 6-11. In the Supporting Students to Effectively Select and Elaborate on Textual Evidence video series, a teacher and coach adapt the rubric to focus on and scaffold specific skills.
