WestEd at NASSP: February 20-22, 2015

by Raising the Bar Staff

If you’re attending the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) conference in San Diego later this week, please stop by the WestEd booth. We have some activities planned that you may find useful:

  • Two high school principals will share their schools' experiences with WestEd's Reading Apprenticeship program in a session on Saturday, February 21 at 8 am. The Reading Apprenticeship program is a research-validated literacy framework that helps secondary school teachers support their students’ literacy while reading subject content. Co-Director of WestEd’s Strategic Literacy Initiative, Ruth Schoenbach, will moderate the panel.

The two principals, Ricci Ulrich, of Buchanan High School in Clovis, CA, and Anna Corral, of Anaheim High School in Anaheim, CA, have seen their teachers and students make great strides as they have changed the dynamics of the classroom by providing social, personal, cognitive, and knowledge-building supports that empower students to more deeply grasp the subject material.

This is worth getting up early for!

  • We will hold a “Meet the Author” hour in our booth on Friday, February 20 from 2 pm to 3 pm so visitors can peruse and learn about WestEd’s popular “Reading for Understanding” book, which is the basis of the Reading Apprenticeship program. Co-author Ruth Schoenbach will be at the booth to speak with conference attendees about how the book and program can assist them in their literacy programs.

  • Also, since this is the season when principals and teachers begin considering summer professional development, we’ll have information about two upcoming opportunities:

See you at NASSP beginning this Friday.
