Aligning ELA Curriculum to the Common Core: Rhode Island School Districts

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) enlisted WestEd to help East Providence and Pawtucket school districts develop an English language arts (ELA) curriculum aligned to the Common Core State Standards and its key principles. WestEd convened grade-level teacher teams across the two districts for six 1- to 3-day sessions.

With support from WestEd staff, the teams developed a deep understanding of the Common Core’s ELA standards and then, for each grade level, developed a scope and sequence, as well as curriculum units aligned to those standards.

Now in their second year working together, and with continuing support from WestEd, teachers on the East Providence and Pawtucket teams are learning how to guide their colleagues in understanding and implementing the new curriculum. These teachers have become the Common Core leaders in their schools and districts.
