Learning from Student Work on Performance Tasks

Understanding Proficiency is a resource designed to support educators in analyzing and learning from student work on performance tasks. The website — developed by WestEd in partnership with the Stanford Center on Assessment, Learning, and Equity (SCALE) — features scored student responses to the Smarter Balanced performance tasks. The student responses are annotated by practicing educators and illustrate the full range of performance levels for each task.

This collection features scored and annotated work from grade 4 students. The math task includes responses to each individual item that that composes that task. The resource collection also features two “case studies”, each featuring an analysis of one student’s response to all the items in the performance tasks and a discussion of next steps to support the student.

Visit Understanding Proficiency for English/language arts (ELA) and math resources at grades 3 through 8 and grade 11, and for videos and professional development tools.

Understanding Proficiency was developed with generous support from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. For more information on the Trust and its programs, visit www.helmsleytrust.org.
